One of the top investigative bodies in Europe has recently
produced warnings in a report that global financial firms are at the gunpoint
of criminal hackers
There have been suggestions that the hackers are
looking to steal $1 billion, if not more, from the global firms this year.
This issue came into highlight when the criminal hackers hit
J.P. Morgan, a multinational banking giant. After this incident, Europol, an
investigative body of European police, made a close investigation. During the
investigation, Europol because successful in intercepting the communications of
criminals.
According to the report published by Europol, the criminals
are tech-gangs based in Russia, and they were planning a colossal hit on global
financial firms. “We were successful to intercept their communication which was
happening in internet chat rooms,” adds the report.
“The global economy should not ignore this threat. The
criminals are already half done in their plans. They have reached a way ahead
to conclude this potential heist and to ensure their success in this plan, they
have groomed the bank insiders,” says Troels Oerting, Head of Europol’s
European Cybercrime Centre in The Hague. He adds that these insiders are mainly
responsible to compromise the alert and security systems in the banks, which alerts
the staffs when the money is being illegally transferred.
“There is no advantage to the criminals in making
thousands of small thefts,” Oerting said. “Instead of wasting their
efforts in making thousands of small thefts, they want to bag big profit
from one single theft on a single big financial giant.”
